It may not be often that you find your Mac with many open Finder windows or multiple windows of Safari or any other app. But when you do and you want to close them all at once, you have two options.
The first is the Command + Option + W. The second one involves mouse clicks. If you're not the three-key-shortcut type, you'll want to check out how to close all windows of a Mac app (including Finder) with this keystroke + click.
Most Mac users know that hitting the Command+W keyboard shortcut will close the currently active window, but with a slight modification and by adding an additional key press, you can close all windows in just about any Mac OS X app or the Mac Finder. What is this super excellent keyboard shortcut for closing everything? The Mac OS X Snow Leopard Finder helps you access and organize most of the important Mac functions while you work. Use Finder keyboard shortcuts to display windows, copy and move files, and launch applications. These keyboard shortcuts help you get things done more efficiently. Key Function Command+A Selects all items in the active window.
How to Close all Windows in Mac App with Keystroke+Click
Note that this method works for all Finder Windows or multiple instances/windows of other apps (including browsers etc).
#1. With the app/Finder open, click on File from the top menu.
#2. Now, press the Option/Alt key on your Mac keyboard.
#3. You should notice that the Close option changes to Close All.
#4. Click on Close All and all the windows will be quit/closed. Mac computer word processing.
That's it. Being a keyboard-shortcuts guy, I've wondered if this one helps. But I realize, of late, that this tip will be helpful for those working their mice a lot (I'm thinking digital artists).
There is one interesting exception to this though. While in Finder, or Chrome the default option is Close and the Close All (or Close All Windows) option shows only when you press Alt/Option. But in Safari, when you have multiple windows/instances open, you will notice that Close All Windows shows up even without pressing the Alt/Option key.
You should remember that this method will close windows, which means all unsaved work will be lost. For instance, if you've got multiple websites open in different windows of Chrome, closing all windows will lose all the open data. By default, browsers only ask you when you try to close multiple tabs so even this feature won't save data.
The method didn't work for apps like Microsoft Word in Yosemite so the implementation seems to be specific to some apps.

OS X Mavericks :: Finder Keyboard Shortcut For Close Window Does Not Work
Jun 5, 2014OS 10.9.3. This morning the Finder keyboard shortcut Command-W stopped closing windows and instead opened a folder burried fairly deeply in my Home folder. I moved that folder and managed to get Command-W to stop opening it, but it will still NOT close a window in Finder. Nor will it close windows in applications. What does happne is that the frame of the window flashes (but it remains open).

However I mainly typing using an external fullsize Apple Japanese Keyboard that I perchased from the Japan Apple Store.
One issue I'm having is switching betwen windows in the same program.
On US keyboards, the command is COMMAND + `
However this does not work on the Japanese model, as the ` key is actually on the same key as @, and requires pressing shift, breaking the shortcut.
Does anyone know the Japanese shortcut to change between windows in the same program?

Dec 27, 2009Hi, I just got a new Macbook for xmas. Turned it on today for first time and downloaded Google Earth. I somehow dragged it into the Macintosh Hard Drive. Now when I click on the Macintosh HD icon, and the window opens up, I see the Google Earth icon to the left of the search box. When the arrow hovers over it, it shows the path to where the app is saved. If I click it, it opens the application. Its also in the Applications subfolder. I want to keep the program but how do I get it off the top of the HD window?

OS X :: How To Close A Window/program While In Expose Mode
Apr 18, 2010I was wondering if there was a way to close windows while in expose mode. For example, I hate it when I go to a site and a few pop ups come up and i turn on expose mode and i have to click on each one and make it come up and then press exit and then reopen expose and then click on another pop up and then exit and reopen expose and etc etc.. To be more specific its kind of like the new windows 7 feature where you hover your mouse over the icon at the bottom and those little windows come up (kinda like expose) but those little windows have little x's where you can just exit the window without having to click on it and then exit and then go back down to the little icon and etc etc.

OS X :: New Window Keyboard Shortcut Opens Two Windows?
Feb 10, 2010So this is a new thing that started happening, and has got me stumped. When I hit Apple key+N in Safari, a new browser window will open, I will be switched to the Finder, and a new window in the Finder will open up. This new window in the Finder is the Computer window, the one listing the HD, the network icon, and any attached disks. It is not the same window I would get by hitting Apple+N while in the Finder. Only seems to do this while in Safari.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Cannot Close Mail Window - Sending Email To Almost 300 Recipients
Mar 1, 2012I tried to send an email to almost 300 recipients through Mail. For whatever reason (not important to me for these purposes) the message cannot send on the server it attempted to use.The message itself remains on my desktop, with a dropdown error message over it. Here's the problem: due to the number of recipients, the dropdown menu goes beyond the lower end of the monitor.
When I view the message in Mission Control I can see that there are options at the bottom of the error message like Edit Message, Try Later, and Try Selected Server, but I cannot click on any of those to try any of them. Also, Tab seems to have no effect on what button is highlighted, and Try Selected Server remains the active choice. If I press return it will try the same server that did not work and then the message remains. I have also tried going into the Outbox and deleting the message but that doesn't work either.

Safari :: Clicking On Red Button (close Page) Opens A New Window
Jun 9, 2012Mac Os Close Window Shortcut Keys
When I try to close safari using the red dot at the top left hand side of the screen instead of the window closing it opens a new blank safari window. Infact the same happens when I click the amber and green buttons also.
I recently have had to system updates (last night and today). Last night I also had a problem that has fixed itself where pressing the command + Q buttons would not clos safari and the 'Quit safari' in in the safari drop down was greyed out. As I say the later isue has fixed itself after I force closed and the updates loaded on. Not sure if the two issues are connected.
